CROWNS & BRIDGES
Crowns and Bridges are fixed prosthetic devices that are applied when natural teeth are heavily decayed or too week to survive with just a filling. Unlike removable dentures that can be taken out and cleaned daily, crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants and can only be removed by a professional.
Crowns are typically made of porcelain, which can be made to appear very natural, and are used to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can also be used to improve the look of and the alignment of a tooth. Crowns can also be placed on top of implants, in order to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for another procedure.
Crowns are often recommended to:
- Protect a week tooth from fracturing.
- Restore an already fractured tooth.
- Replace a large filling when there is not enough of the original tooth remaining.
- Attach a bridge.
- Cover a dental implant, a discolored or misshaped tooth, or a tooth that has had a root canal treatment.
On the other hand, Bridges are recommended when there is one or more missing teeth – by spanning the space where the teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space.
Like Crowns, Bridges are also available in a number of materials – porcelain being the most popular. Both porcelain and ceramic bridges can be matched to the color of natural teeth to enhance the beauty of your smile!
